The employer of a maid

What do you call the person who employs a maid to do the housework?

Context: 19th Century. The owner of the house is a rich woman. I also would like to know the word you'd use if the owner were a man.

Dialogue:

- What are you doing here?
- I am the housemaid.
- Who killed your [lady, dame, master, employer, patron]?
- Not me. Here you are, the culprit.
