1 Maybe we're causing more trouble over there in Iraq than the whole effort has been worth.
2 Maybe we're causing more trouble over there in Iraq than the whole effort has been made.
3 We have been troubleshooting on this old computer for a day now. Maybe we are doing more damages to the system than the whole day’s effort has been worth.

No. 1 is the original sentence I quote from a newspaper, and 2 and 3 are just my improvisations.
Is senetence 1 grammatically correct?

In my opinion the sentences are illogical. The gain is or is not worth the expenditure . How can the loss be worth the expenditure?

The gain is or is not worth the expenditure.

How can the loss be worth the expenditure?

We must ask if the gain is worth the effort, or if the gain is worth the loss; not if the effort is worth the loss.

Was X worth the effort? Not, was the effort worth X?
