The effects or the effect

Hi teachers,

I came across this sentence on a newscast. "As the effects of the financial turmoil continues to grow, people are starting to feel the pinch". I feel that "continue" would be justified, agreeing with "the effects"

Please help me solve this problem.

Thank you.

There's definitely an agreement problem there, but there's no help in your excerpt to suggest which way to go. As the effect continues As the effects continue Take your pick.

Hi Avangi,

I, sometimes, have problems using singular and plural forms. "effect" when it's connected with "financial turmoil" or "drugs abuse", does it come in plural?

Thanks

Hi,
Yes. I think plural is more common than singular in these cases. The more complex the "syndrome" the more likely are multiple effects.

"She's still suffering [from] the effects of losing her husband."

Hi Avangi,

Just one more question though - when we put "side effects" or maybe "Butterfly effect", would "effect" come in plural? Or singular? Sometimes you could see "side effect(s)", "Greenhouse effect(s)" in both forms.

Thank you.

Cause and Effect, Butterfly Effect, Doppler Effect, and Greenhouse Effect are names describing very specific relationships between things. The singular "effect" is used in the name, regardless of how many separate effects may ultimately result from a single cause.

I don't know if these names should be capitalized - probably not.

I wouldn't place "side effect/
