Hello there,

Can you explain why it has instead they have? Are there any other similar examples?

- The problem is that people fear unknown, and the effects it has on their lives.

I'm not sure, but:

'The problem is that people fear unknown, and the effects (which) it has on their lives.'

it- fear unknown -> singular

If you write this sentences (without all informations) in another way, you may understand it:
Fear unknown has effects on their lives.

But as I said, I'm not sure, if it is because of this reason.

hello there, i am not very well-versed in the exact grammar rules but here is an explanation for your question... see in English there are sometimes compound nouns that are used in a sentence as singular nouns. 'fear' is a compound comprising of all kinds of fears, however it is categorized as a singular noun therefore the pronoun for it is a singular one, namely 'it',
