The EDGE of Existence program is raising public awareness

Fortunately, steps are being taken to save these animals. The EDGE of Existence program is raising public awareness about this problem.

EDGE is the acronym for Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered, but I'm not so sure its meaning and why it was so named. Could you shed some light? Thanks.

I'd 'translate' "Evolutionary Distinct" as "unique" and "Globally Endangered" as "in danger everywhere" or "at risk of extinction".
