Now I have an additional question.
In a sentence like (a), I don’t think you use ‘the newer’ but ‘newer’, even though you are comparing two things.

(a) Which is (the) newer, this one or that one?

Then can I say like this?
If two things or people are already mentioned or suggested, you use ‘the+comparative’. If not , you simply use ‘comparative.’

We need to start again, sorry. It is my mistake. In your first post, I was thinking about 'the' before 'books', not before 'easier'.

Your original question:

My answer should have been 'No—in fact, the omitted 'the' is the usual.'
