The Earth/ Earth

the word Earth is sometimes used preceded by the definite article and sometimes it is used without it. is there a rule for this?

I don't think I have heard it called "The Earth" for a long time, just Earth, as in Mercury, Venus, Mars, etc. we do not put "the" in front of those. But in the past it was The Earth, I think.
