The Earth and the Moon...

When should the word earth be capitalized; what about the word moon?
For example how would you correct this sentence:
"I saw the earth, the moon and the rest of the solar system."

I would think that the Earth would be capitalized because it would be a proper noun, but I'm not sure if the same thing goes for the moon .

The moon never gets capitalized, and the earth, sometimes. There are no rules for these things, only common sense and conventions. I suggest capitalizing "earth" only when it is the name of the planet—in the same contexts you would capitalize any other planet name. That rules out "earth" in your sentence, because you can't say "I saw the Mars." If it was "I saw Earth, the moon ...", then, yes. If
