The duration of a local bachelor course is a year shorter than (that) in the United States.

Do we need the word (that) there? If we do, can we ommit it just like we do in many other cases?

Hello, Hongkie. -- Actually, 'that' is not good there at all. You should either omit it or replace it with 'one': The duration of a local bachelor's program is a year shorter than one in the US .
