___ the door handle

What is the verb to use :

___ the knob to open the door. (I know it is 'turn')

___ the door handle to open the door (what about here?)

Does this make sense and have I usedthe correct words? Is it correct to say 'keep the door handle down/pushed down) What about saying "handle goes back up?"

The keycard will come out of the door only if you keep the door handle down even after you've opened the door. If you let go of the door handle and the handle goes back up the key won't come out.

Thank you

It all seems a bit lengthy and cumbersome. Would something simpler like the following do? Keep the door handle pressed down while you remove the keycard.

It depends how the handle operates. It could be "depress", "push", twist", for example.
