The dollar buys less.

Dear Teachers,

Hello. I read a sentence in a newspaper as follows:

"The fed wants the economy to grow but not so fast that inflation gets out of control. That‘s when the prices of things go up and the dollar buys less."

I couldn't get the mean that "The dollar buys less."
Could you help me to understand the meaning with some paraphrases of the above-mentioned expression?

Hope to have your prompt help.

Thanks and best regards,

David Kim

Thank you.

So it means you came to buy less with the same amount dollars than before. Is this correct?
