I went to the doctors( I do not know if possessive is required here?) or I am at the doctors.
Why do we use "the" and which rule or rules for the uses of "the" can be used to justify its meaning in the given context?

I see the use of 'the' in the doctor('s) as the idea of the doctor as an institution. There are certain words which, if used with the definite article suggest an activity rather than a particular person or place. Examples include:
