the different people or just different people

Hi,

Today, I came upon this phrase, "the different people", and wish to ask for help in understanding this.

... identify the different people....

Why not just "identify different people"?

You didn't give us enough context, but presumably it is speaking of specific or previously identified different people, i.e. it is a limited set of people, not just any different people.
