The difference between "basis" and "base"

Hi there!

Could you explain what the word " base " means in the sentence below? Can I replace it with the word " basis"? Thanks!

While in the Antarctic, Admiral Byrd established a base and named it " Little America"

A base in that context means an camp or building / buildings where they've set up 'home' - normally a military thing (centre of operations etc.)
