The difference between "our life" and "our lives"

(a) Without electricity, our life would be very inconvenient.
(b) Without electricity, our lives would be very inconvenient.

I think that both (a) and (b) are correct English, but I don't know what is the difference between (a) and (b). I guess that the expression "our life" assumes that everyone's life is basically the same. Meanwhile, maybe, "our lives" means that we lead many different kinds of life." What is you take?
