The difference between "opimistic" and "assertive" ?

Please look at this question.

The spokesman reported that the company is still ( ) about a successful merger.

A. optimistic
B. assertive

Its correct answer is "A.optimistic". I agree that it should be the most suitable adjective but I still think "B.assertive is okay.

Is "optimistic" used for modifying a noun or something and "assertive" used for modifying gerund or something ? I think they are under the similar meaning.

Could you explain to me what the difference or usage is between "optimistic" and "assertive" ?

Thanks in advance.
