What's the difference between "ledge" and "edge" or they are complete synonyms?

They are not exactly synonymous, but they can describe similar locations:

He stood on the narrow ledge projecting from the cliff. (Here the projection is separate from the end of the cliff itself.)

He stood on the edge of the cliff. (Here he stands on the end of the cliff itself.)

An edge is more general, whereas a ledge is smt. horizontal coming from a vertical surface. That's how I understood
