The difference between: during v. throughout

What is the difference between "during" and "throughout"?

I perceive none, but I might very well be mistaken. At least there might be slight shades of difference I am not aware of.

Clue me in, please. Thank you.Emotion: smile

"throughout" means "throughout the whole of", while "during" can mean "at some point during". For example,

It rained throughout the night -- all night
It rained during the night -- at some time in the night

It is clear now.

Thank you both a lot.Emotion: smile
