The difference between "contain" and "cover"

Hi everybody!
Please help me with this question:
This national park contains over 200 kms of rain forest.

Can I rewrite this sentence like this:
This national park covers over 200 kms of rain forest.

I feel that there is an overlap between the two word.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Clive!

Thanks for your answer. However, I quite don't understand it. Could you please give me more explanation about the second sentence:

Can I rewrite " the first sentence" like this:
This national park covers over 200 kms of rain forest.

I do want to know if it's OK if I write like this because I can't distinguish between "cover" and "contain"

Hi,

Note that you need to say 'square kms' when you talk about area.

Sometimes we speak like there is no difference between 'covers' and 'contains'. '

But imagine a park that has 200 square kms of rain forest and 100 square kns of grass

Many thanks to Clive, for your kindness & professional explanation.
