The difference between bereaved and orphaned

bereaved

Deprived of a close relation or friend through their death. (I don't get it)

Orphaned

A child whose parents are dead.

If a child's parents die then that child is said to be "orphaned". Because parents are relations, someone who becomes "orphaned" is also technically "bereaved", but to me it seems unusual to use the word "bereaved" in such a case.

orphan - a child who has no living parents. There are special homes for orphans called orphanages.
