The detail of "store credit"

I have read past threads here englishforumes, but am not sure about store credit's detail yet.

1. Is it a certain object or just a kind of system of refunding?

2. If the word "store credit" is used for a system, is that basically became a card or a paper like receipt, and given customers and then can be used anytime by the customer?

Thank you.

A 'store credit' is given to a customer who returns an item that was sold by the store, but that the customer does not want. Some stores will refund the purchase price of the item in cash to the customer. Other stores will issue a store credit.
