I have been to the Delta. I have been to the Tallahatchie Bridge (it would definitely be a death fall) and I have played a gig two doors down from the Carroll County Picture Show site where Billie Joe, Tom, and the brother put a frog down Bobbie Gentry's back. Only like forty years later. Sherman missed Carrollton, Mississippi and all the old antibellum houses still stand.
MC, I saw your Grace Potter heads up too late.I did see most of the Stax documentary that aired on Aug. 1st. (I have been listening to a newly received Otis Redding cd) and ordered, received, and watched a WONDERFUL documentary called "Elvis and June" about Elvis's romance with his first sweetheart, June Juanico. He should have married her! Biloxi, Mississippi - 1956. The footage is just so cool! The clothes are cool, the cars are cool, Biloxi is cool. This is some of the best Elvis footage I have EVER seen.

Private stuff. June is interviewed extensively and she seems really cool. Probably about 70 years old now and looks great! This is the young, cool, Cadillac Elvis way before things got weird. There is footage of him water skiing in black pants and a long-sleeved black shirt cause he was sunburned. He stayed at the Sun n Sand and they went to floor shows at Gus Stevens (Camille, let alone Katrina took all that out). Anyway, I ordered it thinking it would maybe be sort of cute but this DVD is amazing! The cool side of Elvis.

Biloxi probably looks glamorous on the DVD, but the fact is that back in 1956, if you wanted to go to a bigger town, you went to Gulfport. I think the "business district" of Biloxi was about three blocks long. Maybe four. The western end had the drive in bar. YES! Drive in, order a beer (or whatever) and a carhop would bring it to you. I was always careful to avoid the exit lane of that place! Not too far away, but on the opposite side of the street was an Italian restaurant (don't remember the name) with red checked table cloths, candles in raffia Chianti bottles, and in addition to their standard Italian menu (I don't think I ever had an Italian dish there) they had the world's greatest soft shell crabs for the price of dirt! Wonderful!Can't remember the name of the nighclub (hotel?) on the waterfront where we spent New Years Eve, 1956. There was some sort of "name" act playing. I don't remember that part because afrter we left the house, I realized I forgot to put on earrings, so I went back in, turned on the lights in the bedroom, and there was a GIANT RAT playing teeter totter in my jewelry box! I went without earrings, and the next morning I boiled ALL of my jewelry! Then there were the giant black "water roaches." And mosquitos so big my husband practiced air traffic control with them...

They were HUGE! And I had never heard of self rising flour in my life, so I tried to make bread with it using yeast and it rose out of the bowl and engulfed my kitchen like a real-life 1956 sci-fi movie! And I'd never heard of chicory coffee... Bought some thinking it was "real" coffee. ~~blech~~ And then there were all the "Colored Only" things I'd never heard of in my life before. I was in trouble ALL the time!
Suzy Dalin', this California girl was a genuine misfit the whole time she was in Biloxi! But Elvis did stir things up when he came to town.

Oh! And then there was the first time I went to the "beach." The surf was NEVER up! Mind boggling.

The Stax Documentary is special. But people who want to know the total Stax story should get the box set.
Carla Thomas, Brooker T. and the MGs, and all those Otis Redding tracks that aren't "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay."
I love the notes, about how Otis stopped performing "Respect" after he heard Aretha's version. "It's her song now."
A while back, I happenedto be introducied to Steve Cropper. Frankly, at the time, I didn't believe a word he said. At the time I didn't realize the inter-racial phenomenon that was Stax Records. Who's this white guy talking about riffs that were obviously "soul" anyway?
Turned out it was the real Steve Cropper and the stories he told about the Stax experience were spot on.
You really need to listen to the Stax box set. It includes a lot of tracks that never made it to radio. But some of 'em are golden.

Amd when you figure in the importance of the Loraine Motel in Memphis... it'll change your life.

Hey, AFAIC it isn't just the guitar, it's the whole instrumental family. I hate that same-sounding artificial "music" as much as I dislike hip hop.
