The definitions of special offers or products?

Hello,
I read the definition of DM in a dictionary, but I do not know the real meaning of “special offers, not products” in the following sentence. Could you explain it to me? Thank you very much.
DMs are normally used to promote special offers, not products.

Thanks again.

DM = Direct mail? If so, you don't usually use direct mail to say "Hey, this is a great product" but rather to say "Hey, this is a great time to BUY this product because right now we are offering 30% off" or some other special deal.
