The definition of this wording

Hi people,

I came across this sentence -

'Examined together, they cast in bold relief the tensions between the forces of consolidation and those leading to fragmentation in post-war American cities.'

The wording of 'cast in bold relief', I've never come across it before and I'm not sure what it means. Can you help me please?
