Those dictionary definitions are good. In both cases, REASON does not relate to HOW; REASON provides the WHY, hence the common phrase "the REASON WHY ...".

No, I disagree with all your examples. They all relate to the WHY and not the HOW.
1. The flood. The HOW is: "water formed streams and rivers, and flowed down mountains, exceeding the banks and overflowing into areas that should be land". The rain is the WHY, not the HOW.
2. Seeing "no reason to doubt it". Reason is NOT related to HOW. A reason to doubt a product's success is a reason WHY
