the definite article before more than

She saw that the more than 50 people crowd on the sidewalk were watching the fight.

Is this sentence OK?

She saw that the more than 50 people crowd on the sidewalk were watching the fight.

Is this sentence OK? You can use 'the' in front of 'more than'. eg you can say 'the more than angry crowd. However, the phrase '50 people crowd' does not work, due to the two nouns together. Say something like

She saw that the more than fifty person crowd on the sidewalk was watching the fight.
