The definite article and subclauses

Hi everyone.

I'm not sure about these sentences - should there be a definite article or not (and why/why not?)?

1. We always go skiing in ____ Rocky Mountain.

2. The Beatles made their début at ___ Cavern Club in Liverpool.

3. I don't think you are ____ right man for the job. (Should obvioulsy have the but why?)

4. Which monitor is ____ brightest?

I alos wonder if a subclause is the same thing as a dependent clause?

What kind of subclause abd what time do these two have?

1. I wonder if he will come. (I think this one refers to present time but I'm not sure about the type of subclause)

2. I'll be surprised if he comes. (I think this one refers to future time and is a conditional clause as 'will' occurs in the mainclause)

Thanks in advance!

Top answer

a) 1) the Rocky Mountains (mountain ranges require "the" while individual peaks don't (the Alps, the Andes etc but Mount Everest, Mont Blanc etc) 2) the Cavern club (I googled this up; clubs may or may not require "the") 3) the right man (if you picture a man who is the perfect/best candidate for the job then you'd say "the right man". "A right man" would mean there are many men suitable for the job but obviously that wasn't the intention of the speaker). 4) the brightest (superlative) b) 1) I wonder if he will come.

  • (this refers to the future; you can replace "if" with "whether" if you want to; subordinate clause; not a true conditional clause) 2)I'll be surprised if he comes.
  • (you're right about this one; conditional I)
