Hello.
Could you tell me what 'deal' and 'trade' mean in the following context?
Charles Dickens <A Christmas Carol>
...The night before the Christmas, The ghost of Marley who was former business partner of the protagonist came to Scrooge.
He said
"Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence were all my business. The dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!"
My interpretation of those is as follows.
deal
distribute, give out, (gifts etc.) among several; deliver as his share or deserts to a person (esp. of Providence etc.; dealt him happiness, good measure. [1]
trade
the amount of goods or services that a business buys and sells. [2]
