The country's army stood prepared/preparing for war at all times.

Hi teachers!

The sentence 1 below is from the book I study now. What I am wondering is whether we can say 'prepared for ...' rather than 'preparing'. Also, I want to know the exact meaning of 'stood' in the sentence. Does it literally refer to 'standing of a field?

1. The country's army stood prepared for war at all times.

2. The country's army stood preparing for war at all times.

As always, many thanks native teachers.
