The correct word
I have been trying to write an application letter and keep starting sentences with 'When I was..' (ie When I was 20 I decided to return to Perth)
This is looking less and less correct and I can't find out anything about it, please help.

It is fine. If you think you are repeating it too much, then try 'In 1992...'
