The correct past tense

Hi all,

Is there any rule when to use "would" and when "past simple" for several verbs might exist in a story at the times we're using English?

As a non-native English speaker, I've a difficulty with this. Honestly speaking, I always use "would".

For instance:

1- When I was a teenager, I would see my friends and we would go to cinema with each other at times.

2- As a student, I would work hard on my math problems when I would go to school and my teacher would encourage me there.

Hi. I am not a native speaker, but I felt like telling you what I have learnt about it. Would to refer to past actions is mainly used to refer to regular actions in the past or past habits.
