The Correct Form of "To Be"

In the sentence "...Nick said, nose high as if owning slaves was a good thing," should it be was or were? I'm confused because slaves is plural, but only one person is the subject.

Top answer

It's 'were' in American and formal British English. The form is not plural, but subjunctive, just as it is in 'if I were you'.
