The + comparative

1) Of the two methods, this seems to be better than that.

2) Of the two methods, this seems to be the better than that.

As far as I know, 1) is correct but my friend said 1) is wrong because there's no "the".

Is he correct??

Don't use "the" when you have "than".

This hammer is better than that.

This hammer is better.

This hammer is the better of the two.

This hammer is the better.
