The comma before a complement

The protagonist is one of Amber's princes and his other brother Breys is attacking Amber to occupy the realm his other brother Eric has ruled.

The only thing was, we were up against another prince of Amber. one who occupied what was definitely a strong position. I was worried, but with the impending coronation, it seemed about the only course available to us, and I decided to go along for the whole ride.
[Nine Princes in Amber" of The Great Book of Amber by Roger Zelazny]
I think "we were up against another prince of Amber" is a complement of "was."
So I was wondering why the comma is positioned before, maybe, a complement.
Thank you in advance for your help.
