The colour of my shoes.

I have two sentences and I would like to know which one is right. But I would also like to know why since I would like to explain it to others. Here they are:

1. The colour of my shoes is white.
2. The colour of my shoes are white.

I suspect it's the first because the subject of the sentence determines the form of the 'to be' verb, but I've never studied English at this level (disadvantage of being a native speaker I suppose).

It’s just as you said: the subject ( the colour of my shoes ) determines the form of the verb. A singular subject means a singular verb.
