the clock's pendulum stopped swinging/oscillating

Hello,
Is it true that "The clock's pendulum stopped swinging" sounds odd? I found the sentence in Merriam Webster's Dictionary and I see nothing wrong with it, but it sounded odd to a few people.
Merriam Webster's Dictionary defines it as: "moving backward and forward or from side to side while hanging from something". I think so too, but I was told that a swing is "a movement in one direction only. For example, only forward or backward, rather than both.

Can't I trust the dictionary on this one?
