The circus acts/programs/performances

My granddaughter enjoyed all of the circus acts, especially the clowns.

Hi,

What does "acts" in the above refer to? Programs or performances? Thanks.

It's closer to performances. Variety shows (see "vaudeville") are divided into short acts. At a circus, some of them might be the lion tamer, the man shot out of a cannon, the trapeze artists, the bareback riders, the trained seals, the jugglers, the acrobats, the dancing elephants, and the tightrope walkers.

  • Each 'act' is introduced separately by the master of ceremonies.
  • One act follows another and the whole series forms the 'show'.
