The choice of tense in a sentence from Lady Chatterley's Lover

Hi there, the following conversation were taken from "Lady Chatterley's Lover" by D. H. Lawrence. My question is why the author use past participle here? Normally speaking, in my opinion, we should say " I haven't noticed". could you explain please. thank you very much and have a nice day.

“The game-keeper, Mellors, is a curious kind of person,” she said to Clifford; “he might almost be a gentleman.”

“Might he?” said Clifford. “I hadn't noticed.”
