"The child development" or "Child development"

I need to talk about child development in general. However, I'm not precisely sure about correct expression: "the child development" or "child development". Incidentally, some times I find it really difficult to add "the" before words or phrases. Hence, I would really appreciate it if someone could provide me with some advice on using "the" appropriately. In addition, please give me a link of a website to read it further.
