The chart below gives information about the most common sports played in New Zealand in 2002.

The bar chart displays the most popular sports among each gender in New Zealand in 2002.


Overall, boys were more involved in sports activities, but in certain kinds of sport, namely athletics, netball and swimming, females prevailed over males.


The sport where there was the biggest difference between the number of participants from two genders was netball (girls 25% and boys around 3%). However, in athletics, where only approximately 5% of participants were females and nearly 4% males, the difference was negligible. The last sport that played more girls than boys was swimming, here nearly 23% of swimmers were girls, and almost 15% were boys.


In contrast, cricket was the sport where males dominated in numbers ( slightly more than 10%), and girls accounted for only nearly 1% of all participants. The next sport where there were more boys than girls was marital arts ( 10% and nearly 3%, respectively). The most popular sport for boys was soccer (25% of them played it whereas only 5% of girls took participate in these matches).
