The chart below gives information about the age of women in Australia when they gave birth to their first child in 1966, 1986 and 2006.

The bar chart illustrates the percentage of the age at which Australian females had their first baby in three different years 1966, 1986, and 2006.


Overall, the age under 19 and 19-21 showed a downtrend, while 30-34 and 34-39 years old experienced a growth. Besides, women aged 25-30 and over 40 had a fluctuation.


At the beginning of the period, the proportion of teenagers and women aged 25-30 becoming mothers was around 33% and 35% respectively. The most common age was 19-24 about 62%, whereas over 40 was only approximately 2%. While those aged 30-34 and 34-39 ranked 4th and 5th with nearly 12% and 8% respectively.


In 2006, there was a dramatic increase in the percentage of women aged 30-34 and 34-39, about 45% and 30% respectively. The females who had babies when 25-30- year-old grew slightly, approximately 48%, and over 40 climbed to 3%. However, these figures for 19-24 decreased by around 34%, while under 19 leveled off by about 21%.
