The chart illustrates how many people in the age group of 25-34 either rented or owned a house in the UK during a 10-year-period, starting from 2004.
Overall, the figure for homeowners experienced a downward trend while the opposite was true for rentals.
Starting at nearly 60% in 2004, ownership dropped slightly by almost 2% in 2005 before suffering a brief period of stability for the following 2 years. Subsequently, the period between 2007 and 2011 witnessed a steady decline to just over 40%. Meanwhile, rentals began the period at a level of one third of ownership in 2004,namely 20% . This figure then rose by just under 5% in 2006, remaining unchanged at this point in the next year before growing up gradually to around 40% in 2011.
In addition, this trend continued for both figures with rentals soaring rapidly to about 45%, overtaking ownership, which was only 40%. The number of people renting a house reached its peak at just under 50% in 2014, approximately 10% higher than ownership.
