"the changes that happened" or "the changes happened"?

Hello,

Which sentence is correct and why?

1. "The map shows the changes happened in the area from 2007 to 2010."

2. "The map shows the changes that happened in the area from 2007 to 2010."

I think that the two sentences are correct, but my classmate says that the second phrase is only correct, because we should include "that".

Could you help me?

Thank you!

Only the second sentence is correct. You must include 'that' (or 'who' or 'which') when it stands in the subject position in its clause. In 'that happened in the area', 'that' is the subject, so it cannot be omitted.
