The chance or a chance?

Hi. Please tell me which is correct? If they both are correct, please tell me what the difference is.

Where would you go if you had the/a chance to pick the best place to go?

Top answer

Both are fine; there is no difference in intent. Choice depends on how far ahead in the sentence the speaker is thinking.
