The cell or Cell

Two biologists Schleiden(1838) and Schwann(1839) presented the cell theory. This theory states that all plants and animals are composed of cells and the cell is basic unit of life.

Can we omit 'the' from 'the cell'. i think it because we are talking here about a perpendicular cell. Thank you
