The car was sold by Mr. Jones.
The car was sold by the best salesman in the dealership.

It's rather vacuous.

The car was sold by him.

Gives very little information other than the seller was male.
The active voice is strongly preferred when the agent is given in the sentence, e.g. He sold the car.

We use the passive when we are not interested in who sold the car, but only the fact that the car was sold.
