The capitalization of "Internet"

Do you think the word "(the) Internet" should be capitalized?

I hear these days more and more native speakers use it in lower case that the spelling "the internet" is accepted as standard English. Associate Press adopted the style "the internet" quite recently, didn't it? What do you think about this? How about "(the) Web/web"?

I don't capitalize them. Most of the regular posters of replies here on EF don't either. There are a couple of holdouts who still do; GPY and teechr spring to mind.

Thank you so much for your answer, Blue Jay.

May I ask you an additional question? Which do you think is more appropriate when non-native speakers use the word "the Internet/ internet" in a written examination and the like? Are both okay?

the internet
________

To write 'the Internet' nowadays is like writing "I heard it on the Radio" or "I saw it on Television". Once the technology is well known, the capital letter disappears.
