Would you say that the verb works both in active and passive forms in this sentence?

The candles blew out in the strong wind. 
The candles were blown out in the strong wind.

"The candles blew out in the strong wind." is preferable because of the attraction of "blown" for out as in "I was out in the strong wind."

Sorry, I blame the drugs. The attraction is between "out" and "in." (Hmm. kinda like that.) To my ear, that weakens the connection between "blew" and "out."

Maybe it's just me.
