the calls of the birds, carrying clearly through

They knew it was spring when the wild duck flew north again, to Siberia. Early in the morning, when he got up to chop wood and light a fire, Rakesh saw the V shaped formation streaming north-wards, the calls of the birds carrying clearly through the thin mountain air.

Could you explain the emboldned parts to me?

As you climb upwards from sea level, air has a lower density and becomes "thin". In this thin air, sound is clearer. So the birds' calls are heard more clearly.

Thank you friend.

Does the "calls of the bird" mean "sounds produced by the birds for no reason" Or "Are the birds really calling someone (e.g. for a help or something)"?

No bird makes a call for no reason. Birds make calls to tell other birds where they are, to indicate that this is their patch of territory, to attract females, or to alert other birds to predators.

I have seen these migrations of ducks and geese many times. At night, or on cloudy days, I don't see them, but I hear them calling to each other. I think they are calling out so they know how far away they are from each other and can stay in the flying "V" formation. The geese are especially gregarious birds - when they are together in flocks you can hear them from a long distance.
