The bus

Hi,
I am late. Someone asks me why I am late. Do I say:
"Well, I missed a bus"
or
"Well, I missed the bus".

I notice that with transportation the definite article is often used (it's the bus I wanted to take to work, I guess???). But the indefinite I see to.
